A QR code is simply text encoded as a grid of black and white squares that any phone camera can read. When you generate one here, whatever you typed — a link, a WiFi password, a phone number — is translated into that grid according to a public standard. Point a camera at it and the phone decodes the squares back into your text and acts on it: opening the link, joining the network, or dialling the number.
QR codes generated this way are static, which comes with a guarantee worth understanding: the content is baked into the image itself, permanently. The code never expires, never stops working, and does not depend on this website existing. Print it on a menu, a business card, a poster, or a wedding invitation and it will scan identically in twenty years.

For print, use the largest size (600px) so the code stays sharp, and keep strong contrast between foreground and background — dark squares on a light background scan most reliably. As a rule of thumb, a printed QR code should be at least 2×2 cm for close-range scanning, and bigger if people will scan from a distance.
Up to about 2,000 characters, but less is better: the more data you encode, the denser and harder to scan the grid becomes. For anything long, encode a short link to the content instead of the content itself.
